Guilty until proven innocent

"Millions of dollars in assets have been seized from an Auckland woman even though she faces no criminal charges."

"The restraining order made under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act means she cannot sell or control any of the property.

The law essentially forces someone to prove how an asset was paid for, even if they are acquitted or criminal charges are not laid.

These cases are determined by the civil level of proof, the "balance of probabilities", rather than the much higher criminal evidential threshold of "beyond reasonable doubt"."

Guilty until proven innocent it seems!!

4 Oct 2013 - Last updatd
"A political protester who fraudulently paid $15 million into her bank account has been sentenced to 200 hours' community work.

Hawera woman Kiri Campbell, 32, ripped off Taranaki businesses by almost $65,000 by using cheques from closed bank accounts to pay for cars, furniture and groceries."

...

"Campbell is part of the One Peoples' Public Trust who see themselves as "Freemen on the land", and believe individuals have to agree to be subject to government and statute law and are otherwise only held to their own version of common law. They see the banking system as corrupt.
The movement began in the United States in the 1970s and spread to Europe.

The FBI's website shows "Freemen" or "sovereign citizens" are considered a domestic terrorist movement in the US"

Video game triggers AOS callout

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/9408377/Video-game-triggers-AOS-callout

"Two teenagers at the centre of an armed police callout in Palmerston North were firing guns in a PlayStation game, only to be confronted with the real thing outside their house.

Hamiora Canterbury and Zane Lafaiki, both 18, were caught in the middle of an Armed Offenders Squad callout in Highbury yesterday.
The pair were playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on their PlayStation, a combat-based video game, when armed police circled the Somerset Cres house calling for them to come out with their hands up"

....

"Police arrested a woman at the house when she was found to be wanted on another matter, Stavropoulos said."

How convenient a woman was arrested at that house also, I wonder if pretexts are used to justify the search of homes without warrants.  May or may not be in this case, but i do wonder if pretexts are used.

Spying New Zealand

Spying seems to be the big thing lately, I find it disturbing that with the exposure of all the illegal spying on citizens going on around the world, that these pieces of legislation are being passed to make their actions legal.  Like committing theft, getting caught and then passing legislation to make theft legal.

16 Nov 2013
"When Rebecca Kitteridge was named New Zealand's next spy boss she is said to have asked if the job came with an Aston Martin.

That is the private face of the woman who, according to those who know her, has a wicked wit, isn't afraid of staring down prime ministers if that is required of her, and is also a devoted mum who – for the record – drives a somewhat more modest Mazda Demio"
